Year of the Monkey Educational Post: Tool Use in Monkeys

Crack It Open! How Monkeys Use Tools to Get Food Article Summary by Breanne Cyr, Primates Incorporated Volunteer For a video demonstration of tool use in Burmese Long-Tailed Macaques, view: Think of the various ways humans use forks and knives to eat their food: some use a fork in one hand and a knife in the other; some switch utensils around so that they both cut and eat with their dominant hand; some don’t use a knife at all and just use the side of their fork to cut. Some of this variation is individual and some is due to culture. Furthermore, the method one uses may differ depending on what kind of food is being eaten. Meet the Most Vigilant Primates!

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

The first ever Most Vigilant Primate (MVP!) award was created by Paul McComas, author and a supporter of many important causes, including Primates Incorporated. He hosted a P.I. fundraiser and gave Amy Kerwin, President of Primates Incorporated, the first MVP award on July 10th, 2014:   Inspired by Paul’s creativity, and knowing it takes a tremendous team effort to construct a monkey sanctuary, Amy wanted to recognize more amazing humans as MVPs! Meet the Rest of the Most Vigilant Primates (MVPs) of Primates Incorporated The Buchholz Family: the family who helped us get the land we needed! A message from Mari Buchholz: My husband and I both grew up in Madison, Wisconsin. We met in high school and have been married for 30 years. We have three children between the ages of 17 and 23, one dog, and a house full of cats, five to be exact. Our family is…

Land Volunteer Day – Summer 2016

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

Thanks to everyone who volunteered on the sanctuary land! The Weaver Family is an amazing family who comes and clears out our nature trail and cuts down our dead trees! We tried to wood chip the dead wood but realized we need an industrial-sized wood chipper for all of our dead wood! Feel free to visit the land at W8782 County Rd M in Westfield, WI. It is a beautiful time of year to view it. We apologize the tribute bricks have not been permanently placed in the ground due to a delay with the contractor, but you can still view them at the entry way of the trail. Thanks to everyone for your support, we are making great progress daily and we should be helping our first monkey by 2017! Thanks Monika for bringing your friend from Russia, Igor, to help us out and for taking these beautiful pictures!…
