Frequently Asked Questions

How will you socialize monkeys that have been single or pair-housed for many years?

Primates Incorporated recognizes that rehabilitating captive single and pair-housed monkeys can be a slow, gradual process. First, the monkeys will be placed in a quarantine area. While in quarantine, the Primates Incorporated staff will assess the eating preferences of the monkey to see what he or she prefers.

Classical and operant conditioning will be established so that positive reinforcement training principles are in place when transporting monkeys to and from various housing quarters. Positive reinforcement training will allow the monkeys to establish a trusting relationship with the personnel and will allow them to cooperate with the staff at their own pace. Monkeys will then be transported to a larger area where they can undergo socialization with another monkey who we have assessed to show the most affiliative behavior. Primates Inc. staff will monitor affiliative behaviors before socializing the monkeys to ensure that injury and distress are minimized.
